The IELTS Research Committee, comprising representatives of the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, is pleased to announce the awarding of the 2016 Caroline Clapham IELTS Masters Award to David Wei Dai, who completed his master’s degree at the University of Melbourne in Australia. His dissertation on the use of non-native accents in listening tests for young learners was supervised by Carsten Roever.
One reviewer described David’s work as “an inventive piece of research on a contemporary issue in language teaching and testing, [making] a distinct contribution by going beyond etic perspectives on accent to also investigate emic dimensions and to look at the relationships between them.”
The award, which carries a prize of £1000 and sponsored attendance at the annual Language Testing Research Colloquium (LTRC), aims to encourage young researchers to pursue careers in language testing. Counted among former winners are professors and lecturers, researchers in examination bodies and other organisations, and a director of a teacher training institute.
