Update on English requirement for Indefinite Leave to Remain or Citizenship in the UK

People who need to prove their English language skills as part of an immigration application must take a test that appears on the UK government’s list of approved tests. The changes take effect from:

12 November 2015 – for Citizenship (Naturalisation)
19 November 2015 – for Indefinite Leave to Remain (Settlement).

People should use IELTS Life Skills or IELTS for UKVI as part of their application for UK Indefinite Leave to Remain or Citizenship.

If you are applying for a Tier 4 student visa to study a bachelor or postgraduate degree to a Highly Trusted Sponsor (HTS) / the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors, the below policy does not affect you. For further information, please visit IELTS in the UK page.
